Along the south-western coast of Turkey, bordered on one side by the Western Taurus Mountains and on the other by the Mediterranean Sea, lies Antalya (Adalia), a vibrant Turkish town with a rich history. Adalia was indeed one of the principal ports since Roman times and remained an important commercial centre during Byzantine rule, though it fell victim to various Saracen raids over the centuries.

In recent years, Antalya has become one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations thanks to its stunning beaches lapped by crystal-clear waters, ideal for those seeking a seaside and relaxation break. Added to this are remnants from the Roman era and the old town centre, which has largely preserved its ancient Ottoman architecture.

Antalya’s Beaches

Since the 1970s, Antalya has been recognised as a vibrant coastal town that, thanks to the building and tourism development undertaken over the past fifty years, has become a first-rate tourist destination. In particular, the construction of accommodation and hotels of every type and category has helped attract tourists not only from within Turkey but from other countries too. One of the most picturesque stretches of the coast is certainly the Old Harbour (Yat Limanı), an ideal spot for a leisurely stroll along the bay where boats and yachts dock. It’s also the perfect place for an aperitif or dinner, given the large number of bars and restaurants serving traditional dishes.

Antalya’s coastline, particularly the western and eastern stretches, is lined with beaches bathed in crystal-clear waters, whilst the central shoreline is characterised mainly by sheer cliffs rising 20 to 30 metres above the sea and covered in lush vegetation. To the west of the centre lies the beautiful Konyaaltı Beach, featuring a long stretch of sand and pebbles surrounded by bars and cafés. In the old town area, you’ll find Mermerli Beach (Mermerli Plajı), which owing to its location is ideal for those wishing to enjoy some relaxation after exploring the centre.

Continuing along the eastern coastline, Lara Beach is worth noting, offering stretches of free beach interspersed with equipped establishments providing all services and several restaurants. The area is rich in resorts and hotels, as well as facilities offering water sports activities such as parasailing, jet-skiing, windsurfing, kayaking and much more. Other popular beaches include Zuğa Beach, known for its beach clubs and venues, Konyaalti Beach frequented for its calm, clear waters, and Inciralti Beach, a quiet, lesser-known stretch near Lara Beach.

What to See in Antalya

Aspendos Roman Theatre, a short distance from Antalya

The centre of Antalya’s old town is called Kaleiçi, which in Turkish means “inner castle” and encompasses the entire area within the city walls. This comprises a network of narrow streets and alleyways lined with Ottoman-style houses, stone buildings, boutiques, restaurants and cafés.

Access to the Kaleiçi area is through the Hadrian’s Gate, a structure comprising three arched openings supported by Corinthian columns, erected around 130 AD to commemorate the visit of the Roman Emperor Hadrian to this area. From here, Ataturk Caddesi avenue leads to other important monuments such as the clock tower, the fluted minaret and the truncated minaret.

Another essential stop in town is certainly Antalya’s Archaeological Museum, which features a route exploring Lycian, Roman and Byzantine civilisations. In particular, it houses well-preserved Roman statues and sculptures, large sarcophagi and the remains of the ancient theatre of Perge.
