Istanbul is located in northwestern Turkey, within the Marmara Region. It borders the Black Sea to the north, the Aegean Sea to the west and the Sea of Marmara to the south. The Bosphorus, the Sea of Marmara and the Dardanelles Strait separate Istanbul’s Asian and European sides. With a population of over 15 million people, Istanbul is one of the world’s most populous cities.
Historically, the city was known as Byzantium and later Constantinople. It served as the capital of the Byzantine Empire and the Ottoman Empire, and today Istanbul is an important cultural hub and tourist destination. It is home to some of the world’s most iconic monuments, including the Basilica of Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and the Blue Mosque.
